Insurance Coverage and Your Bottom Line

Insurance is the one thing a business needs to have that it hopes never to have to use. Many businesses go years without having to call on their insurers to perform and a lucky few may never have a claim. However, when a claim or lawsuit arises, you need your insurer to perform and to handle the claim promptly and professionally. Although many insurers act professionally, many also deny coverage for claims when the only thing standing between a business and financial ruin is the insurance policy. Often, the reasons for denying claims are questionable, if not clearly wrong. Here are a few things you can do to make sure your insurance company will be there if you need it.

Make sure your insurance agent or broker understands your business. Insurance should be the foundation of a company’s risk management program. An agent or broker can provide the right insurance only if he or she takes the time to understand your business. If an agent or broker is interested only in taking orders, you need to take your business elsewhere. As your company grows and becomes more complex, make sure that your agent has the sophistication to provide tailored and comprehensive coverage.

Keep copies of all insurance policies in an accessible location. When someone calls me about a potential insurance coverage issue, it is surprising how difficult it often is to get copies of the policies. Policies should be kept in a central and accessible location. It is also a good idea to scan policies and to keep copies on a server off-site, perhaps on a cloud-based server that can be accessed anywhere. Note: insurance certificates are not policies, and declaration pages (a page or two that outline policy limits) are only a small part of the policy. Insurance policies are typically many pages long. Make sure your agent or insurer delivers complete copies of the policies.

If you have a claim, or events happen that may give rise to a claim, notify your insurance carriers immediately. Insurance carriers often deny claims that would otherwise be covered because the insured did not give timely notice of the claim. The safest course is to put the carrier on notice of the claim in writing and to receive acknowledgement from the carrier that it is on notice. Check the policy for any particular requirements for giving notice. Notice to your agent may not be enough.

Understand the insurer’s basic obligations. Most insurance policies impose two basic obligations on an insurer: To defend (to hire and pay for a lawyer to defend lawsuits and claims) and to indemnify (to pay for settlements or judgments). As a general proposition, an insurer’s duty to defend is broader than its duty to indemnify. This is important because often an insurer will agree to provide a lawyer to defend a case – thus saving the insured thousands of dollars -- even if it is not sure that the claim is covered or completely covered.

Beware of potential limitations in commercial general liability policies. Commercial general liability (CGL) policies are often the backbone of business insurance. However, many insurers have loaded up their policies with so many exclusions (either in the policy or on endorsements to the policy) that a broad range of potential claims may be excluded. Your agent should review the exclusions with you. All policies are not the same and it is often possible to get endorsements that limit exclusions. It may also be possible to obtain other types of coverage to plug gaps in the CGL coverage.

Make sure your agent is familiar with new specialized types of coverage. There are many types of specialized insurance policies that cover risks that may be excluded by CGL policies. Examples include “media tech” policies that provide coverage for trade secret violations and certain types of breach of contract, cyber liability policies (which can, for example, cover losses due to hacking and the release of personal information), and environmental impairment liability or pollution policies.

Do not simply accept an insurance company’s determination that a claim is not covered. If your insurance company denies a claim, or if it issues a “reservation of rights” letter (a letter stating that it will cover a claim for now, but may deny later), do not simply accept the insurance company’s determination. Insurance companies often incorrectly deny claims. In such circumstances, an agent may be of some help, but you really need to see a policyholder’s insurance coverage attorney. A coverage attorney can tell you whether or not you should fight the insurance company’s decision. A coverage attorney may be able to convince the insurer to reverse its decision without the necessity of litigation. If litigation is necessary, coverage attorneys are not afraid to take on insurers.

Your policies may cover more than you think. We sometimes refer to insurance policies as buried treasure because many businesses forfeit coverage by not calling on their insurers to act when they should. As noted above, insurers will often agree to defend a case if part of the case is not covered or if there are coverage questions. This alone can save a business many thousands of dollars. Insurers can also often be convinced to pay claims if there is a legitimate (although perhaps not certain) basis for coverage. If it is necessary to litigate with an insurer, courts may not accept an insurer’s arguments. Earlier this year, for example, the Supreme Court of Georgia rejected an insurer’s arguments seeking to avoid coverage for construction defect claims. Georgia law is clear that ambiguities regarding coverage are to be resolved in favor of the policyholder.

Family Promise of Gwinnett Hosts Second Annual Bed Race

Lawrenceville – On April 16th Family Promise of Gwinnett County will host their 2nd annual Bed Race. The event will be held at the Historic Lawrenceville Courthouse square with food, inflatables and face painting. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will be a fun event for the entire family.

David Chandley of WSB-TV2 will be the Grand Marshall for the parade and announcer for the race, where five person teams will push their racing beds around the square.

The day's events will conclude with the Fanatic Fan Fundraiser gala at the Gwinnett Place Marriott. Come join us and wear your favorite team colors. The MC of the event will be former director of sports from WSB-TV2, Chuck Dowdle. There will also be other sports figures from the Atlanta area. Music will be provided by Sounds of Motown.

Nancy Yancey Wins Humanitarian Award

DULUTH, GA - On Tuesday, March 2nd before a room full of executives and advocates passionate about ending homelessness in our state, Rainbow Village's CEO Nancy Yancey was honored by the Georgia Alliance to End Homelessness with the coveted 2011 Essential Piece Award. Through this award, GAEH recognizes annually one individual that truly models service, collaboration and leadership in the mission to end homelessness. Recipients exemplify innovation and exceptional service and offer unique programs that are making a real impact on the state of homelessness in Georgia.

Yancey was shocked to learn that she had even been nominated. As CEO Nancy is the face of Rainbow Village throughout the community but she is far more comfortable singing the praises of her staff, board, volunteers, community partners and residents than she is touting her own accomplishments or taking credit for the great work that they do. Nancy was so touched to discover that it was her own staff that came together to nominate her for this prestigious award. Though the organization as a whole has been recognized often through the years, they felt it was time for Nancy to get the personal recognition she deserved for her outstanding leadership and vision.

"Nancy is long overdue to receive recognition for what she has given to the families of Rainbow Village," said Lynette Ward, Rainbow Village's Director of Adult Programs. "She is not just the CEO; she is the heart of Rainbow Village. For 18 years she has been an anchor, an encourager, a believer in people, a voice of reason and inspiration. She's touched so many lives. I hope that by receiving this award she sees how much we value and appreciate her and her commitment to our mission."

Ward was once a resident of Rainbow Village. As a graduate of the program, she understands first-hand the impact this community–based transitional housing program has on the lives of homeless families that pass through.

"Thanks to Nancy's vision and guidance Rainbow Village has evolved into a comprehensive recovery program that enables homeless families to successfully return to a life of self-sufficiency. I know. I'm living it!" said Ward. "We are successfully breaking the cycles of homelessness, poverty and domestic violence one family at a time. Nancy is so committed not only to the mission, but also to each and every person that comes through our doors. She has a huge heart that was made for this very purpose."

As Rainbow Village celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, Nancy is passionately leading the charge to expand the vision for Rainbow Village and the impact it has on our community in the years to come. GA-PCOM to Offer Master of Science Degree in Organizational Development and Leadership

SUWANEE, GA. – A Master of Science degree in Organizational Development and Leadership (ODL) is the newest program scheduled to be offered at GA-PCOM on Old Peachtree Road in Suwanee beginning with the College's fall term in August. While GA-PCOM offers only graduate and professional level programs, most of which focus on healthcare (osteopathic medicine and pharmacy), the ODL program brings with it a different perspective. "This program will be attractive to individuals in a variety of businesses and organizations where promotion and advancement are dependent upon forward thinking and leadership ability," according to Bill Clinton, MS, program director and Dr. Jeff Branch, coordinator for the Georgia campus program. "The approach of this accredited program is unique because it focuses on each enrolled student – their business, industry or organization, their backgrounds, their goals, where they are and where they want to be," he says. Classes are intentionally small – 12-15 entering students each term. Small classes allow the students to interact…to share workplace experiences...and learn from each other. Dr. Branch says he expects students will come from a variety of backgrounds…perhaps banking, healthcare, not-for-profit organizations and pharmaceuticals to name a few. "The more varied the class, the greater the opportunity for learning," he adds.

Graduates of the Philadelphia Campus program – on which the model is based - give ODL high marks for changing the lives of many former students. "Not only does the program help students in their workplace and prepare them for upward mobility, many of the skills learned and applied on the job, can also be applicable in their personal lives." The ODL program provides a solid foundation in leadership theory, team and organizational dynamics, coaching and consulting, personal and professional development, project management, systems literacy and diagnosis and strategic thinking. Georgia Force Selects East2West Media Group as Official Video Production Company

East2West will provide video production services & crew for the in arena game presentation and streaming broadcast for all Force home games at the Arena at Gwinnett Center and production/post production services for Force television commercials. For the games, the East2West crew will consist of camera operators, replay technicians, audio engineers and graphics operators. Mottola will call the shots himself from the director's chair.

Gwinnett County Residents Called to Contribute To American Cancer Society’s Historic Cancer Research

Community Involvement Can Answer Critical Questions about Cancer Causes, Prevention

DULUTH, GA (February 28, 2011) – Residents of Gwinnett County have an unprecedented opportunity to participate in a historic study that has the potential to change the face of cancer for future generations. Men and women between the ages of 30 and 65 who have never been diagnosed with cancer are needed to participate in the American Cancer Society's Cancer Prevention Study-3 (CPS-3). CPS-3 will enroll a diverse population of up to half a million people across the United States and Puerto Rico.

Residents of Gwinnett County can enroll in CPS 3 at the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce Building, John D. Stephens Education Center, 6500 Sugarloaf Parkway, Suite 260, Duluth 30097, on Thursday, March 24 from 11 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.; Tuesday, March 29, from 9 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.; and Wednesday, March 30 from 10:30 a.m. – 2 p.m.

CPS-3 will help researchers better understand the lifestyle, environmental, and genetic factors that cause or prevent cancer.

"My mom is a two-time cancer survivor, and I'm doing all I can to make sure my children don't have to say that…. I really believe this (CPS-3) is part of the answer," a study participant said.

CPS3 is one of several American Cancer Society activities taking place across metro Atlanta this spring, including Relay For Life of Gwinnett County on Friday, May 6, at he Gwinnett Fairgrounds. Relay For Life is the Society's signature event, taking place in more than 5,000 communities nationwide and around the world. The Gwinnett Relay is the largest Relay in the world, attracting more than 10,000 people, including 2,000 cancer survivors, and raising $2.5 million. To enroll in CPS3, individuals will be asked to read and sign an informed consent form; complete a comprehensive survey packet that asks for information on lifestyle, behavorial, and other factors related to your health; have your height, weight, blood pressure, heart rate, and waist circumference measured; and give a small blood sample. Upon completion of this process, the Society will send periodic follow-up surveys to update your information and annual newsletters with study updates and results. The in-person enrollment process takes approximately an hour to complete. Periodic follow-up surveys of various lengths are expected to be sent every few years to individuals.

"Many individuals diagnosed with cancer struggle to answer the question, 'What caused my cancer?' In many cases, we don't know the answer," said Alpa V. Patel, Ph.D., principal investigator of CPS-3. "CPS-3 will help us better understand what factors cause cancer, and once we know that, we can be better equipped to prevent cancer." Dr. Patel added, "Our previous cancer prevention studies have been instrumental in helping us identify some of the major factors that can affect cancer risk. CPS-3 holds the best hope of identifying new and emerging cancer risks, and we can only do this if members of the community are willing to become involved."

Researchers will use the data from CPS-3 to build on evidence from a series of American Cancer Society studies that began in the 1950s that collectively have involved millions of volunteer participants. The Hammond-Horn Study and previous Cancer Prevention Studies (CPS-I, and CPS-II) have played a major role in understanding cancer prevention and risk, and have contributed significantly to the scientific basis and development of public health guidelines and recommendations. Those studies confirmed the link between cigarette smoking and lung cancer, demonstrated the link between larger waist size and increased death rates from cancer and other causes, and showed the considerable impact of air pollution on heart and lung conditions. The current study, CPS-II, began in 1982 and is still ongoing. But changes in lifestyle and in the understanding of cancer in the more than two decades since its launch make it important to begin a new study.

The voluntary, long-term commitment by participants is what will produce benefits for decades to come. "Taking an hour or so every few years to fill out a survey – and potentially save someone from being diagnosed with cancer in the future - is a commitment that thousands of volunteer participants have already made. We're looking for more like-minded individuals in Gwinnett to join this effort that we know will save lives and improve the outlook for future generations," said Dr. Patel.

Aurora Theatre Hires New Director of Education

Aurora Theatre is delighted to announce the newest member of its full-time staff. Larry Ruth has been hired as Aurora Theatre's Director of Education, having succeeded Susan Reid who established the department three years ago.

Larry Ruth brings extensive theatrical, academic, and corporate experience to Aurora Theatre. Mr. Ruth received his Master of Fine Arts degree in theatre directing at the University of Minnesota in 1988 and has directed theatrical productions across the nation. In addition to teaching, acting and directing at the university level, Mr. Ruth has also taught classes for middle school and high school students, and has coached many professional actors. As an educator, he has developed acting and directing curricula, started a radio theatre company, and created college orientation plays based on current student issues.

At Aurora Theatre, he will hit the ground running, directing Aurora's upcoming educational production of Gary Grinkle's Battles with Wrinkles and Other Troubles in Mudgeville. This production is geared for elementary school students and is a part of Aurora Theatre's acclaimed Learning Library Series. Gary Grinkle's will be seen by 5,000-10,000 local school children beginning in January of 2011.

In the corporate arena, Mr. Ruth used his theatrical background for success in the position of Director of Creative Services for M²Creative, a multi-million dollar events management firm located in nearby Duluth, GA. While there, he conceived, wrote and directed corporate theatrical events and created dynamic sales presentations for high profile clients.

Duke Realty Corporation has sold 6 West Druid Hills, a seven-story, 81,857-square-foot office building in its Druid Chase office park, located at I-85 and North Druid Hills Rd. in the Northlake submarket of metropolitan Atlanta.

Wes Hardy and Chris Brown of Duke Realty represented ownership in the sale.

The buyer was Crawford
Media Services Inc., a provider of creative, turn-key electronic media solutions for television, film and archival clients. The firm was represented in the transaction by Peyton Wimberly, Dean McNaughton, and Peter Glover, all of Cushman & Wakefield of Ga. Inc.

The building was 100 percent vacant at the time of sale. The purchase price was undisclosed.

Officer Jacquet partnered with Rebuilding Together Gwinnett to assemble a volunteer team of 113 people, 33 businesses and 5 church and religious groups to re-roof and renovate the exterior of an older home. Officer Jacquet began the project after meeting the home's 80-year-old owner, Katron Sosebee, while Katron was trying to secure a tarp on his failing roof. The project included a roof, rear deck and staircase, front porch, driveway, front walk, paint, landscaping and outdoor furnishings.

Emory Eastside and Duke Realty Host Topping Out Ceremony

On November 29, Duke Realty hosted a topping out ceremony for Emory Eastside. This event was held to commemorate a major milestone in the construction process of the new 60,000 square foot medical office building.

The ceremony included placing a small cypress tree and an American flag upon the top of the structure to symbolize growth and bring good luck. The final beam was signed by all attendees and will be hoisted onto the building's structure.

This is the third medical office building on the Eastside campus and will include a spine center, neurology, general surgery and endocrinology specialties. Completion date is scheduled for May, 2011.

Criminal Justice, Paralegal Added to Program Offerings

Everest Institute-Norcross has opened a $1.5 million, 16,000 square foot expansion that nearly doubles the size of the campus. A dedication and ribbon-cutting for the new addition was held on Oct. 21 at the campus, 1750 Beaver Ruin Road in Norcross.

"Private education expansions, like the one we're celebrating at Everest Institute, enable students to secure good paying jobs, which is what this state needs now more than ever," said Georgia Assistant Labor Commissioner Linda T. Johnson, at the event.

The Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce was on hand to cut the ribbon for the new facility during the event that was also attended by several dignitaries including State Representative Pedro Marin (D-Duluth).

"We are proud of the contributions that this growing campus and the other Everest campuses in the Atlanta area make toward meeting the workforce needs of this state," said Crystal Celestine, president of Everest Institute-Norcross.

The campus can now serve approximately 1,800 students including new training in criminal justice and paralegal.

Trident Medical Imaging – Gwinnett joins forces with independent imaging centers across Georgia

To ensure Georgians have access to the highest-quality scans without the inflated costs of many hospitals, Trident Medical Imaging – Gwinnett and other independent imaging centers from across the state have launched Outpatient Imaging Coalition (OIC).

Many Gwinnett County residents may not realize they can potentially save thousands of dollars and lower their co-pays by having MRI, CT and other scans performed at outpatient imaging centers instead of hospitals, helping to reduce overall healthcare spending.

"When a physician refers a patient to a hospital for an MRI, that cost can be as high as $2,500. That patient may not realize he can instead choose to go to an outpatient imaging center for, in some cases, five times less," says Laura Gallagher, spokesperson and creative marketing director for OIC. "However, not all outpatient medical imaging centers are created equal. That's why OIC developed a set of high standards that all participating centers will have to meet before being considered for membership."

OIC has launched a website (www.GoOutpatient.com) where Georgians can easily search through OIC members who meet its high standards and locate the nearest center.

Health-insurance companies are also working to inform their customers about the cost discrepancies between centers and hospitals. United Healthcare Service LLC mailed a letter earlier this year asking customers to "check with your doctor to see if the scan can be performed at an imaging center which is usually less expensive than a hospital." The letter also highlighted that the company's copayment for hospital scans is $95, while the copayment for a "free-standing facility" is $25.

District Wins $1 Million in Scholarships

On October 19, 2010, the Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation announced that Gwinnett County Public Schools won the 2010 Broad Prize, honoring large urban school districts that demonstrate the strongest student achievement and improvement while narrowing achievement gaps between income and ethnic groups. The money goes directly to graduating high school seniors for college scholarships.

As the winner of the largest education award in the country, Gwinnett County Public Schools will receive $1 million in college scholarships for its high school students.

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan joined philanthropist Eli Broad at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City to announce the winner, which was selected by a bipartisan jury of eight prominent leaders from government, education, business and public service, including three former U.S. secretaries of education.

"Gwinnett County has demonstrated that an unwavering focus across a school system – by every member of the district and the community – can lead to steady student improvement and achievement," said Secretary Arne Duncan. "Districts across the country should look to Gwinnett County as an example of what is possible when adults put their interests aside and focus on students."

More than half of Gwinnett's students are African-American or Hispanic, and half are eligible for subsidized lunches.

"Gwinnett County's stable leadership and singular commitment to ensuring every student has the skills and knowledge to be successful in college and in life makes it a model for other districts around the country," said Eli Broad, founder of The Broad Foundation.

Each year, 100 of the largest school districts in America that serve significant percentages of low-income and minority students are automatically eleigible for The Broad Prize. Districts cannot apply for or be nominated for this award.

Gwinnett County was selected as a finalist this past spring by a review board of 18 prominent education researchers, policy leaders, practitioners and executives from leading universities, national education associations, think-tanks and foundations that evaluated publicly available student performance data.

Because Gwinnett County won this year's Broad Prize, its high school seniors who graduate in 2011 will be eligible for $1 million in college scholarships. Broad Prize scholarships are awarded to students who demonstrate significant financial need and show a record of academic improvement during their high school career. Scholarship recipients who enroll in four-year colleges will receive up to $20,000 paid out over four years ($5,000 per year). Broad Prize scholars who enroll in two-year colleges will receive up to $5,000 scholarships paid out over two years ($2,500 per year).

The Gwinnett Coalition for Health and Human Services is planning its 11th annual Gwinnett Great Days of Service scheduled for Friday, October 1 and Saturday, October 2, 2010. This event engages thousands of volunteers in a day of community service projects all around Gwinnett. Last year we had over 80,000 volunteers, including large corporations, schools, small businesses, individuals, church groups, and families, completing 160 service projects which made it one of the largest volunteer initiatives in the country!!

We partner corporate and community teams with local agencies to work side-by-side to make a difference in the community and to learn from each other. The Great Days of Service addresses specific needs in the county through volunteers who complete much-needed service projects for local non-profits and schools. These projects held to build the community while educating citizens and leaders about the needs around them.

Within two years the hospital was ready to construct another labyrinth on the campus of Glancy Rehabilitation Center in Duluth.

We could not have done this without the tremendous support from our Great Days of Service volunteers. We had donations of not only time and labor, but also materials needed to construct this ancient walking path. These labyrinths are a tool for wholeness and a place for meditation and peace. They are enjoyed daily by patients, visitors, staff and community members. In fact, the Glancy labyrinth was on the International Labyrinth Society's tour in 2009, because it was so unique in being handicap accessible.

New trash plan offers more recycling

On July 1, Gwinnett County implemented a new residential garbage and recycling program for unincorporated areas of the county. City residents are not affected by this new plan. Gwinnett County contracted with five private haulers to each serve a designated area, offering consistent solid waste service to all residents.

What are the benefits of the new plan?

Efficient and cost-effective solid waste service

Cleaner neighborhoods: less illegal dumping and reduced truck traffic and wear and tear on our streets

Environmental sustainability: greatly increased recycling opportunities and reduced air and noise pollution

Additionally, the State of Georgia requires all its counties to update solid waste disposal plans every 10 years and to work toward reducing the solid waste deposited in landfills; this plan will accomplish that goal.

What does the new base service include?

Weekly trash pickup of the following items is included in the base service
- Household waste
- Bulky items – old furniture, mattresses, etc. (contact your hauler to schedule pickup)
- White goods – stoves, refrigerators, etc. (contact your hauler to schedule pickup)
- 35 different kinds of recyclable items

What about yard waste?

Yard waste collection is elective

Directed by the Farrelly brothers, 'Hall Pass', was one of two major Hollywood films that took place on the campuses of Gwinnett Medical Center in the last six months. At GMC's flagship campus in Lawrenceville, a patient room has been named after Warner Brothers for their donation to the hospital system.

"With the influx of filmmakers coming to Georgia over the last few years, GMC is enthusiastic about the opportunity to share our location and be a part of the rapidly growing business entertainment industry," said Andrea Wehrmann, hospital spokesperson.

Filmmakers have a 30 percent tax incentive to produce their work in Georgia, Senator Mitch Seabaugh, who led the effort in passing the tax incentive, has stated several times that the Governor has never seen a more thankful and appreciative industry group, so the support statewide is evident.

More than 30,000 pounds of food, clothing, medical supplies and generators were collected by independent contractors working for Primerica in Gwinnett, and shipped in 1,000 boxes to the International Faith Fellowship Ministry mission in Haiti in the wake of the disastrous earthquake there. The material donated and collected is valued at an estimated $100,000 according to Andy Young, senior director of national sales with Primerica, who organized the project. Duke Realty Corporation donated 2,200 square feet of space to the effort at its Crestwood Pointe office park in Duluth to serve as the collection and processing center. Announcing the Hudgens Prize Visual Arts Competition

The Jacqueline Casey Hudgens Center for the Arts is very pleased to announce The Hudgens Prize visual arts competition and juried show. Open to any artist living as a full time resident in the state of Georgia, aged 18 and up, the competition will bestow a $50,000 cash award and an invitation for a solo exhibit upon one selected artist.

The winning artist will be announced at an Award Celebration held in conjunction with the final juried show, which will run from November of 2010 until February, 2011.

The Hudgens Prize represents one of the largest art awards given in the nation. It is an unprecedented opportunity for an artist in Georgia to receive both the large cash prize and the opportunity for a solo exhibit, and the juried exhibit in November will provide great statewide exposure for all of the finalists.

"We are extremely excited to be able to offer such an important award competition to the artists of Georgia. Particularly in times of economic challenge, it is vital that we support the arts and artists, or we lose something that is literally irreplaceable in our culture and our state," said Teresa Osborn, Interim Executive Director at The Hudgens.

The Prize is sponsored by a private foundation that prefers to remain anonymous. "They were strongly interested in supporting the arts on a statewide basis, and also wanted to help increase the visibility and prestige of The Hudgens in the state," said Stan Hall, Chairman of the Board at The Hudgens.

"We are greatly honored that the foundation chose us to be the venue and facilitators for this exciting competition," stated Hall.

The Juror Panel for the competition consists of David Kiehl, Curator of Prints at The Whitney Museum of American Art; Sylvie Fortin, Editor-in-Chief of ART PAPERS Magazine; and Eungie Joo, Keith Haring Director and Curator of Exhibitions and Public Programs at the New Museum in New York.

"We are very pleased with the caliber of art professionals we have assembled to serve on the jury panel for The Hudgens Prize. We feel that this trio will serve us well in making some difficult decisions," states Angela Nichols, Director of Programs and Education at The Hudgens. "They are all well known nationally and internationally in the arts and we're thrilled to have such a well respected and impressive group of jurors."

Kiehl has organized many Whitney exhibitions, including: Memorials of War (2004); Political Nature (2004-05); Ellen Gallagher: DeLuxe (2005); and Two Years (2007-08). He was responsible for the exhibition installations of The Art of Richard Tuttle (2005-06), Kiki Smith: A Gathering (2006-07), and Jenny Holzer: Protect Protect (2009). Kiehl also serves on the editorial board of Print Quarterly; the Board of Directors for Printed Matter; and the advisory committee for the LeRoy Neiman Center for Print Studies at Columbia University.

Fortin is an independent curator, art historian, critic and editor who has worked internationally since 1991. She has been Curator of Contemporary Art at the Ottawa Art Gallery, Program Coordinator at la chambre blanche (Quebec), and a long-term collaborator with OBORO. Her critical essays have been published in Canadian, American and European catalogues, and her reviews have appeared in many periodicals including Art Press, C Magazine, Espace, Fuse (of which she is a contributing editor), NKA: Journal of Contemporary African Art and Parachute. Fortin was named Lexus Leader of the Arts in December 2007.

Joo spearheads the New Museum's unique educational and public programs, including the pioneering 'Museum as Hub,' a curatorial/education hybrid with five international partner organizations. She was previously Director and Curator at the Gallery at REDCAT, Los Angeles. This year, Joo was commissioner for the Korean Pavilion at the 53rd Venice Biennale, where she presented "Condensation: Haegue Yang." She recently organized Nikhil Chopra's performance and exhibition "Yog Raj Chitrikar: Memory Drawing IX," which is on
view at the New Museum through February 14.

Visual artwork of any medium will be considered for the Competition, but it must have been completed within the last two years and meet certain size and weight criteria. The entry fee is just $30 for members of The Hudgens and $50 for non-members (includes one Artist level membership), and entitles each artist to submit up to five entries. Entries are to be submitted via digital images burned onto a CD and mailed to The Hudgens.

The jury will select between five to ten artists to participate in the Finalist's Exhibition, which will run from November 30, 2010 through February 19, 2011. The $50,000 prize winner will be announced at an Award Celebration on November 30, and will have a solo exhibition at The Hudgens Center in December 2011.

Deadline for entry for the competition is June 4, 2010. The Hudgens Prize prospectus contains further details about the competition and information on how to enter, and is available on The Hudgens' website at www.thehudgens.org.

The Hudgens Center currently has three exhibits on view until May 15, 2010, including Herbert Creecy, featuring one of Georgia's most well-known abstract expressionist painters; Georgia Artists from the Permanent Collection and Tannery Row: Selected Works, which highlight some of the wonderful talent from the Buford artists' colony, Tannery Row, in another collection from Georgia-based artists.

The simultaneous presentation of these three exhibits represents a change in the focus and mission of The Hudgens. The center is committed to presenting coordinated exhibits that carry a theme throughout the facility, as these do in featuring Georgia artists, and will present three to four sets of similarly integrated exhibits per year.

SANTA TO USHER IN THE HO-HO-HOLIDAY SEASON IN SUWANEE DEC. 5

Suwanee will welcome Santa Claus to town on Saturday, December 5, during the annual Old Town Holiday Festival and Caboose Lighting. As he arrives on Main Street in his tractor-pulled sleigh, Santa will magically light Suwanee’s red caboose. Showcases 22 Counties Earning Certified Work Ready Community Status

ATLANTA – Governor Sonny Perdue and the Governor’s Office of Workforce Development today announced the second annual Work Ready Awards, which recognized and honored the partners, businesses and individuals who have supported Georgia Work Ready and made it a success.

“Work Ready is helping make our state a top destination for jobs and investment,” said Governor Perdue. “Through the Work Ready program, communities around Georgia have rallied together and committed to developing the talented workforce that business demands and the educational infrastructure to drive sustained economic growth and prosperity.”

Three counties have joined the list of Certified Work Ready Communities. The new counties receiving the designation are Echols, Stephens and Taliaferro counties. Nineteen additional Georgia communities achieved the title of Certified Work Ready in the last year, including: Barrow, Bartow, Bleckley, Brooks, Catoosa, Chattooga, Cook, Dougherty, Franklin, Grady, Greene, Hart, Jefferson, Jenkins, Laurens, McDuffie, Pike, Upson and Ware counties.

“Earning Certified Work Ready Community status shows that local leaders understand the importance of ensuring our citizens have the skills necessary to staff existing jobs and to master the innovative technologies new jobs will require in the future,” said Governor Perdue.

Several Georgia employers were also recognized for their use of Work Ready to profile jobs, make hiring decisions and develop ongoing workforce development programs. The Work Ready Businesses of the Year included:

§ EVCO Plastics, Calhoun: Created job profiles for key positions, assessed 90 percent of its workforce and implemented new training programs.

§ Parker Aerospace, Dublin: Profiled its product support coordinator position, made the Work Ready assessment available on-site and incentivized its employees to become Work Ready Certified.

§ Piolax Corporation, Canton: Using the Work Ready assessment to recruit internal and external candidates with the right technical skills which has reduced training costs and increased productivity.

§ Golden State Foods, Conyers: Created profiles for two key positions and uses Work Ready to hire the most qualified candidates.

§ ProCore Solutions, Marietta: First company in Cobb County to adopt Work Ready and has made the initiative an integral part of its recruiting process, hiring 42 new employees with silver Work Ready Certification or higher.

Georgia’s Work Ready Regions, which support Georgia’s fastest-growing industries by ensuring the necessary workforce is trained and ready to meet their needs, were also recognized for their ongoing success.

The Heart of Georgia Advanced Manufacturing Work Ready Region received the 100 percent Award for assisting all eight counties in the region with surpassing their minimum Work Ready Community goals. Additionally, five Work Ready Regions received the “Go For the Gold” Award for successfully closing their skills gap and meeting their available workforce Gold-level Work Ready Certificate goals. These include:

§ Chattahoochee Valley Aerospace Work Ready Region: Developed one of the strongest and most engaged industry networks, which has led to a significant increase in the percentage of Gold Work Ready Certificates to 19.5 percent.

§ Georgia Auto Alley Work Ready Region: Used job profiles done in the region in partnership with technical colleges to quickly put a strategy in place that led to four Auto Alley counties among the first to surpass the 19 percent Gold threshold.

§ Innovation Crescent Work Ready Region: Developed a process to enroll disconnected youth and unemployed Georgians in gap training, propelling the region from 8.3 percent to 21.4 percent Gold Work Ready Certificates.

§ Middle Georgia Warner Robins Aerospace Partnership (mgWRAP) Work Ready Region: Leads all regions with the highest percentage of Gold certificates holders at 22.6 percent.

§ West Georgia Advanced Manufacturing Partners (AMP) Work Ready Region: Established a complete Work Ready approach to engage industry leaders and meet their specific needs, driving 20.6 percent Gold level certificates.
Georgia’s thriving technical college system is a key partner in the success of the Work Ready program. Each year, the Work Ready Awards also recognize the Work Ready Job Profiling Team of the Year and Work Ready Administrators of the Year from the technical college system. This year’s winners are:

§ Patty Hart, Georgia Northwestern Technical College: Ensures individuals understand the value of Work Ready and have access to both assessments and skills gap training to ensure they are ready for employment.

§ Ann Sechrist, Gwinnett Technical College: Walks job seekers through the process of earning and using a Work Ready Certificate and draws from personal experience when answering questions.

The Atlanta Regional Workforce Board was recognized with the Local Workforce Investment Board of the Year Award. Athletes return to play quicker

Lawrenceville & Duluth, GA - Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is an emerging nonsurgical procedure now available at GMC to help put athletes back in the game quicker. The treatment has been around for more than 10 years, but it was used primarily on racing horses and by oral surgeons. Physicians are now finding that it helps heal human ligaments and sports injuries. PRP facilitates healing by harnessing the body's natural ability to do so and is used for the treatment of wounds, ligaments and tendons.

"I believe that PRP injection is a very promising therapy for treatment of many acute and chronic injuries to the ligaments and tendons." said Dr. Phillips, MD, radiologist for GMC. "Several of our patients have reported marked improvement after months of failed conservative treatment."

Many professional athletes, including football players in the NFL, are currently receiving this therapy. Dr. Phillips is pioneering the PRP treatment in Gwinnett. He also reads the MRI's of the UGA football team and believes this natural method of healing can shorten rehabilitation time.

The PRP treatment consists of injecting portions of a patient's own blood directly into an injured area, which stimulates the body's cells to repair damaged tissue. Platelet-rich plasma is made by placing the patient's blood in a centrifuge that rotates at high speed and isolates the platelets from the rest of the blood. Finally, a few teaspoons of platelets are then injected into the damaged area to serve as a natural catalyst for the healing process.

One of Dr. Phillips first patients, Molly Gay, is a sixteen year-old athlete from Lakeview Academy. Molly had been struggling with patellar tendonitis, or 'jumpers knee'. Her inflamed ligaments caused immense pain and resulted in Molly sitting out for half of her 2009 volleyball season.

"Participating in sports makes her high school experience whole," said Dana Gay, Molly's mother. "After trying everything but surgery, it made sense to try a procedure with no negative side effects. The procedure took minutes and Molly has even been able to perform moderate physical activity as she prepares for basketball season."

The procedure is less invasive than surgery and will help heal the injured tissue. Patients can see a significant improvement in symptoms. This may eliminate the need for more aggressive treatments such as long term medication or surgery as well as a remarkable return of function. The Department of Radiology, headed by Dr. Val Philips, will be offering this quick outpatient treatment on referral by GMC's Sports Medicine physicians. GMC's sports medicine program performs the most surgeries in the state and ranks in the 99 percentile for patient satisfaction.

Local Wonded Airman to be Honored During 600-mile Run

DULUTH, GA. — Shaun Meadows graduated from Winder-Barrow High School, joined the United States Air Force and immediately volunteered for Air Force Special Forces training. In June of last year, he deployed as a member of the Special Operations Community. While serving with an Army Special Forces Team on July 31st, 2008, he was injured. Shaun was chosen by Operation One Voice, a Georgia-based non-profit organization, to be the first honoree with a Georgia connection.

Duluth Police Lieutenant, Bill Stevens, OOV CEO says “ Shaun’s mother is employed by Gwinnett County Police Department and his step-father recently retired from Gwinnett County Fire & Emergency Services. Since we are highlighting Air Force Special Ops this year, Shaun Meadows was naturally chosen to be the honoree of the 5th SOF Run”. Lt. Stevens goes on to say “We (OOV) became aware of Shaun early in his recovery, and once we discovered his connection with Gwinnett County Fire & Police, the pieces fit together perfectly to name him the honoree of the 5th SOF Run.”

She completed her clinical doctoral studies from the University of Florida earning her Doctor of Audiology (Au.D.) degree in 2006.

Dr. Bobbitt is licensed by the state of Georgia as an audiologist and serves on the Georgia Lions Hearing Committee. Community Garden Needs Community Volunteers

Gardeners know that early and proper soil preparation is key to a successful harvest. In the same way, the City of Suwanee is preparing for construction of Harvest Farm, Suwanee’s organic community garden expected to open in the spring, and it needs many pairs of helping hands to do so appropriately.

The City of Suwanee will host a community volunteer day Saturday, October 24, at the Harvest Farm at White Street Park site. Volunteers are needed to help get the site ready for construction, which is scheduled to begin next month. Volunteers will help dismantle part of the existing barn, remove old fencing, and clear out the creek and wooded areas.

The workday is scheduled from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. with breakfast and lunch provided. Preferably, volunteers can commit to working the whole day or half a day (either 8 a.m.-noon or 1-5 p.m.). Snellville, Ga. (June 24, 2009) – Celebrate summer’s end Saturday, September 12 in Lilburn City Park with family-friendly fun during the day, followed by a Banks & Shane benefit concert on the lawn that evening. A complementary shuttle service will begin at 10:45 a.m. from designated free parking areas. Event proceeds benefit Dream House for Medically Fragile Children, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization devoted to children with very complex health issues. Georgia Gwinnett College achieves SACS accreditation

LAWRENCEVILLE – Georgia’s newest four-year public institution, Georgia Gwinnett College, received notification today from the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) that the college has been granted its initial accreditation, less than three years after opening its doors to students. The decision, which came only a year after the college was granted candidacy toward accreditation last June, affirms Georgia Gwinnett’s continuing commitment to academic excellence, public accountability and its capacity to provide effective programs and services based on accreditation standards established by SACS.

Accreditation, which often takes four to six years to achieve, is intended to assure constituents and the public of the quality and integrity of higher education institutions and programs, and to help those institutions and programs improve. These outcomes are verified through rigorous internal and external review processes during which the institution is evaluated against a common set of standards.

“No one thought we could get it done this fast, but we did it and we did it well” GGC President Daniel J. Kaufman said after he received the news from SACS representatives. “Earning accreditation – particularly this early on in the college’s existence – is testimony to the tremendous support we have received from the Board of Regents, the governor and lieutenant governor, the General Assembly, and the entire Gwinnett community. We also want to thank the great staff at SACS for all the assistance they provided during this entire process.”

“In just a few years, we have provided students access to an excellent college education because of dedicated and inspiring professors who are devoted to teaching and student development. Accreditation is a major accomplishment for the GGC team, and I commend all the faculty and staff who worked tirelessly to achieve this milestone in our short history as a college.”

Georgia Gwinnett was established by the Georgia General Assembly in 2005 and opened its doors to students in the fall of 2006. Just days after the college was granted candidacy toward accreditation by SACS in 2008, it held its inaugural commencement ceremony, graduating 17 of its first students. Several of GGC’s graduates have gone on to graduate school at some of the most prominent institutions in the nation – including Harvard University. Once it achieved candidacy status, GGC was able to offer its students access to federal financial aid, including Pell grants and Stafford loans.

When accreditation is awarded to an institution of higher education by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, a regional accrediting agency recognized by the United States Department of Education, it means that the institution has a mission appropriate to higher education; resources, programs and services sufficient to accomplish and sustain its mission; clearly specified educational objectives that are consistent with its mission and appropriate to the degrees it offers and it is successful in achieving its stated objectives.

The accreditation process is a three-step progression, typically spaced over four to six years. The process includes application, candidacy and accreditation. GGC submitted its application for candidacy in October of 2007, and it was granted in June of 2008. Work on the request for accreditation began immediately thereafter, and thousands of pages of documentation and records were provided to SACS in order to certify compliance with the comprehensive standards that must be satisfied in order for an institution to be accredited. Following a review of the submission, SACS sent a 10-member team to the Lawrenceville campus for an on-site visit in April 2009 to verify the accuracy of the submitted materials, assess the facilities and interview faculty, staff and students. The report from this site visit led to the favorable decision today.

“What we have achieved is unheard of,” Dr. Stas Preczewski, vice president of academic and student affairs told the faculty and staff today following the announcement. “We are light years ahead of where others thought we would be at this juncture – earning accreditation in less than three years – but more importantly, we have built a superb foundation that will contribute to our future successes.”

“Less than three years ago, 118 students took a chance on Georgia Gwinnett College. Today, our charter graduates have gone on to further their education or have entered the working world. They were the pioneers.”

“In the fall we anticipate 3,000 students walking the halls of GGC,” Preczewski continued. “Engaging our faculty in our labs and classrooms and witnessing unparalleled construction activities including new housing, a state-of-the-art library and a student center, all slated to open next year. The latter are all additions to the most technologically-modern campus in the state.”

Earlier this month, the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia approved a significant expansion of academic programs for GGC. The three new majors in English, history and mathematics will be added to the college’s current offerings in biology, business administration, psychology and information technology in January 2010 pending approval by SACS. Georgia Gwinnett also has requested the addition of majors in exercise science, political science and criminal justice/criminology, early childhood education and special education. In addition, the college plans to add a major in nursing within the next 18 months to accommodate the 10,000 students expected to enroll at GGC in the next five years. Eligible high school students can now participate in joint and dual enrollment programs at GGC as well, thereby getting an early start on their college degrees.

Gwinnett Medical Center Submits Objections to Appeal of Open Heart Decision

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. –Gwinnett Medical Center submitted a filing addressing errors in the state hearing officer's decision which could prevent the hospital from establishing a desperately needed open heart surgical program within the county. The filing was submitted to the state’s Department of Community Health (DCH), and requests that the Commissioner reinstate the initial decision granting a Certificate of Need to establish an open heart program. It is anticipated that the DCH Commissioner will make a final administrative decision by July 17, 2009.

“We believe the Department’s original approval of an open heart program at GMC was the correct decision,” said Phil Wolfe, President and CEO of Gwinnett Medical Center. “This filing counters points cited in the appeal decision, and will hopefully clear the way for us to bring this critical service to the people of Gwinnett.”

Gwinnett Medical Center applied for a Certificate of Need for its open heart program in January 2008 and received approval from the Department of Community Health in June 2008. Emory University Hospital, Emory Crawford Long Hospital and Piedmont Hospital all appealed the approval, and a hearing officer granted the appeal last month. Following the DCH Commissioner’s final administrative ruling, further appeals are possible as the Certificate of Need process allows parties to seek court review within 30 days of the final administrative decision.

“While we look forward to ultimately securing open heart through the administrative appeal process, GMC is prepared to seek judicial review if necessary,” added Wolfe. “If the commissioner reinstates our approval, we would hope that Piedmont and Emory would not further delay our program by seeking judicial review.”
